Mechelen is a spectacular city in Antwerp, Belgium, in the centre of the Flemish Diamond, mid-way between Brussels and Antwerp. Mechlinians bear the mock name of ‘Maneblussers’, or ‘moon extinguishers’, due to a misguided attempt to put out what seemed to be a fire up in a tall tower one night, but was in fact the moon shining. The medieval Ommegang Parade takes place in the city of Mechelin each year, with the city’s wooden mascot, the Opsinjoorke, or rather its replica, being pulled about and thrown in the air. The city was host to an annual parade of flower floats up until the 21st century.

Mechelen bears resemblance to Bruges in that it trades mainly lace, tapestry, cordwain and furniture, and the city’s gothic-renaissance buildings are solemn and imposing. It fathered great personalities, such as Margaret of York, Margaret of Austria, Charles V, Anne Boleyn and François Mallarmé. Mechelin currently houses the Nekkerspoel Toy Museum, The Technopolis, The Planckendael Animal Park, and the award-winning Vrijbroekpark, with its Rose Garden.
